We have been hunting Pronghorn Antelope on the Durham Buffalo ranch near Gillette, Wyoming for several years. The picture below is of an Antelope that Fred took a few years back on this ranch. Pronghorn Antelope The Durham Ranch is a large and wondrous place to roam. The ranch is about 60,000 acres in size. The primary use for all of this land is to raise Buffalo. Buffalo on the Durham Ranch As you can see, the ranch is quite picturesque. On a clear day, the sky seems to go on forever. Wyoming Sky There are many different animals that call the Durham Ranch home. These include Mule Deer Mule Deer Pronghorn Antelope, Badgers and Prairie Dogs. Prairie Dogs A hunt such as the ones that we have been doing in Wyoming typically lasts about a week. We stay in a hotel in Gillette and hunt during the day on the ranch. This is pretty cushy as hunting trips go. --- ### Hunting for Exotics and Whitetail Deer in Texas - Published: 2024-06-02 - Modified: 2024-06-02 - URL: https://anita-fred.net/exotics-texas/ - Categories: Hunting and Fishing - Tags: Hunting and Fishing Fred has made several trips to the Hill Country of Texas to hunt Exotic Game and Whitetail Deer. This part of Texas tends to provide thick cover and abundant food sources for many animals. Pictured below is an Axis Deer which was taken on a private ranch. The Axis Deer is noted for its large antlers and a very beautiful coat. These deer never lose their spots. Axis Deer The next picture shows a Blackbuck Antelope. These animals are fast and very "spooky". The first sight of a human and they turn and run. Fred was quite fortunate to take this animal at over 200 yards as it started to move away at a fast walk when he entered the area where it was feeding. Blackbuck Antelope Texas also provides the opportunity to hunt many types of Rams and Exotic sheep. Fred is shown here with a Corsican Ram that he took with a Thompson Center Contender Pistol chambered in 45-70 Government. Corsican Ram One of the most interesting Exotic Animals of Texas is the Sika Deer. This animal looks like a miniature Elk. As you can see, it has a similar horn structure to an Elk and has a call similar to an Elk's "bugle". Sika Deer Finally, the Hill Country of Texas is a great place to hunt Whitetail Deer. The animal shown below is a 10-point buck which is typical of the Whitetail population in this part of Texas. Sometimes one can just spend a day or a weekend with friends hunting. A good example of this sort of trip is hunting for hogs which Fred has done several times in Ohio. The picture below was taken after one such hunt. This guy charged Fred and he was forced to shoot it out with him at under 10 yards! Fred spent a week in Prince William Sound camping and hunting Black Bear. This has to be the most memorable hunting trip Fred has taken. The scenery and wildlife in the Sound were just unbelievable. Prince William Sound in Alaska We used a Float Plane service to fly our gear in and out of Prince William Sound. There is a large amount of Float Plane traffic out of Anchorage. In fact, there is more Float Plane traffic around Anchorage than that due to Commercial Airlines. Float Plane As you can see, Fred was fortunate to take a nice Black Bear on this trip. We had a rug made from the hide of this bear. He had very thick fur as he had just come out of hibernation. His hide measures about 6 1/2 feet from corner to corner. This is where we spent our honeymoon and have returned several times since. There is so much to do in this area that a week's vacation is barely enough—and Disney is constantly adding more parks and attractions, so there is even more to do each time we visit. Below is Cinderella's Castle in the Magic Kingdom. Cinderella Castle EPCOT Center has always been our favorite park at Disney World. We have made many visits to Spaceship Earth, listening to Walter Cronkite tell the story of the history of communications. Spaceship Earth at EPCOT At the Land Pavilion, one can learn much about the land and the food we eat, from its origins, how it is cultivated, and the basic food groups. The Land Pavillion at EPCOT Journey Into Imagination is one of our favorites - Sponsored by Kodak, it explores color and imagination. Some of our other favorites in Future World are Communicore East and West, which are now called Innoventions and are full of hands-on demonstrations of the latest technology, Horizons, which explores life in the future, and the Wonders of Life, which explores the human body. Fountain by Journey of Imagination The other half of EPCOT is the World Showcase, where one can learn all about the world's countries, including Mexico, China, Norway, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, Great Britain, Japan and Morocco. Walking around the World Showcase, one can sample food, drink, and entertainment and see items from different countries. Many of the countries also have a ride or film that exposes you to the sights and culture of the country. The restaurants are our favorite part of this park - we have eaten at least once in just about every country and several times at our favorite restaurants, at Mexico, Japan, and China. China Exhibit In the World Showcase EPCOT is a beautiful place at night, with light and fireworks shows, and dancing fountains throughout the park. Fireworks Over the World Showcase Lagoon Fireworks Over World Showcase Lagoon In addition to the three major parks, there are several water parks that are worth a visit - River Country, Typhoon Lagoon, and Blizzard Beach (which we have not yet visited), several Golf Courses, the Walt Disney Marketplace - an open air Disney shopping mall, Discovery Island - an island full of unusual birds and greenery from all over the world, and Pleasure Island - a night spot with restaurants, shops and night clubs. There are also many Disney hotels - we have stayed at the Polynesian and the Caribbean Beach resort. Each hotel has a different theme and stays amazingly true to its theme. We dined at the Wilderness Lodge and could have sworn we were at Yellowstone or Yosemite. Flamingos at Discovery Island The third major park at Disney World is MGM Studios. Here you can learn how movies are made, be part of a game show being filmed, learn how animated films are created, and be part of a famous movie like the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars, or the Muppets. Below is a picture of my favorite ride, the Tower of Terror. where you enter the Twilight Zone and ride in an elevator to the top of the Hollywood Tower Motel only to free fall to the bottom! Tower of Terror at MGM Studios In addition to the Disney parks, there are many other parks in the Orlando area that are worth a visit. These include Sea World, Universal Studios, Busch Gardens (1 hour away in Tampa), and the colorful Cypress Gardens, pictured below. Also an hour east of Orlando is the Kennedy Space Center, where one can take a bus tour to see the building where the Space Shuttle is built and housed, the launch pads and even a Saturn V rocket. When the timing is right, you may even get to see (and feel! ) a launch. We have also gone on several fishing charters in the surrounding Indian River, where there we have caught redfish and tarpon. Cypress Gardens We've taken quite a bit of video and pictures over the course of several trips to Walt Disney World in Orlando. Below is a video montage of our trips. The first stop along the way is at Devil's Tower. This National Monument is best known from the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind. On the road toward the park's entrance, a prairie dog town can be seen. When you reach the tower, there is a visitor's center and a short hiking trail that takes you around the tower. If you bring binoculars, be sure to check out the climbers making their way up or down the tower. Devil's Tower National Monument The Black Hills of South Dakota are the home of Custer State Park, one of the nicest state parks we've ever visited. There are two very scenic routes, Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Highway, on which you can see towering stone pillars. Riding the Wildlife Loop, we have seen quite a variety of wildlife, including Buffalo, Burros, Elk, Whitetail and Mule Deer, Pronghorn Antelope, Bighorn Sheep, and Prairie Dogs. The pictures below were all taken in and around Custer State Park. Buffalo in Custer State Park Pronghorn Antelope Bighorn Sheep In addition to Custer State Park, there are four National Parks in western South Dakota - Wind Cave, Jewel Cave, the Badlands, and the most famous - Mount Rushmore. Mount Rushmore About 40 miles from Rapid City, South Dakota, is the town of Wall, a small western town made famous by the Wall Drug Store. Wall Drug is much more than a drug store - there is everything from Western Wear to Jewelry to Camping Gear. There is also a great ice cream/soda shop and fresh baked donuts. Wall is also close to the entrance to Badlands National Park. The colorful formations in the Badlands are an incredible sight - and a stark contrast to the Black Hills. Fred joined his friend Dirk to hunt Black Bears in Prince William Sound. While Fred was hunting, Anita did some sightseeing. Anita took the picture below during a glacier tour cruise in Prince William Sound. Even though we took this trip in May, there was still a great deal of snow in the sound. Prince William Sound In many places, the snow never really melts. This causes glaciers to form. The shot below was taken by Fred from the air of two of the glaciers in the sound. The rugged beauty of this place is hard to describe. Two Glacier Flows Chunks of ice break from the glaciers where they meet the water. As you can see, some of these clunks are quite large. The chunks of ice take on a blue color because the ice is so densely packed from the pressures of the glacier flow. Ice Chunks from a Glacier The Anchorage area teams with wildlife of all kinds. Moose, Bears, and Dall Sheep are common in this area. It is also not unusual to see a Porcupine along the road when driving. In the Sound, we say Otters, Bald Eagles, Swans, Ducks, many types of birds, and even an Orca Whale. "Mr. Porcupine" Anita took a scenic drive from Anchorage to Portage Glacier. This shot is of the Seward Highway, which borders a body of water called Turnagain Arm. This part of Alaska provides many majestic scenes where high, snow-capped mountains meet bodies of water. The Seward Highway and Turnagain Arm Near the end of the trip, after Dirk and Fred returned from hunting, Dirk and his wife Marnie took us to Homer, Alaska, where we chartered a boat and went fishing for Halibut. As you can see, our group did quite well! A Day's Catch of Halibut This was truly one of the most memorable trips we have taken. We want to express our deepest thanks to our friends Marnie and Dirk for their wonderful hospitality. It was an 8 hour drive from Gillette to Cody, much of it through the scenic Bighorn Mountains. Yellowstone is an incredible park - there is so much to see and do there - beautiful mountain and lake scenery, geysers and other thermal features, and wildlife. We stayed at the Old Faithful Inn, the only place within the park that was still open in October. This was the last weekend before they closed for the season. October was a nice time to visit the park - it was not very crowded and the snow and cold weather seemed to enhance the scenery. We stayed in a room overlooking Old Faithful Geyser, so every hour or so, we could look out our window and see it go off! Geyser of the Upper Geyser Basin Old Faithful Geyser The first morning we ventured out to photograph Old Faithful. Old Faithful is only one of a number of geysers in the Upper Geyser Basin. We took a leisurely walk along a trail that passed by a number of geysers, and saw many of them erupt. Each geyser has a different schedule and length of eruption - and they erupt with differing regularities. We saw one that erupted for several hours. A Colorful Hot Spring Pool Also, along the trail are other thermal features, such as colorful hot spring pools. The most famous of these is Morning Glory Pool - with colors resembling the Morning Glory. The cold weather enhanced the steam coming from these pools and geysers and made them an even more spectacular sight. A shot from the edge of Old Faithful Geyser Basin Later in the day, we took a ride on the main road that forms a loop around the park. We stopped at several points around the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River. This area is one of the most beautiful spots in the park. The canyon is very colorful and there are several waterfalls along the Yellowstone River. We took several short hikes, one of which descended to the bottom of one of the waterfalls. It started to snow on one of the hikes and it was interesting to see parts of the waterfalls that were starting to freeze. The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River Yellowstone River Waterfall As it approached dusk one evening, we drove to the north end of the park, towards Mammoth Hot Springs. We had read that this stretch of road was a good place for spotting elk. We were not disappointed - we saw a large bull elk eating grass at the side of the road. When we arrived at the town of Mammoth we were amazed - this town appears to have more elk residents than humans. They were everywhere - on people’s lawns, in front of the post office... it was an amazing sight. Along the roads in the park, we also saw a wolf, many buffalo, and some moose. Yellowstone is truly a great place for watching wildlife. One of the Park Regulars As we headed back to our hotel on our last evening in Yellowstone, we noticed that it was starting to snow quite heavily. When we awoke in the morning, we discovered that it had snowed over 9 inches and all of the roads in Yellowstone were closed. We were quite concerned since this was the last day the Old Faithful Inn was open and we were scheduled to fly out of Salt Lake City early the next morning. We packed up the rental car and headed out to the road where we were stopped for about 4 hours until the road was opened. We left the park at 2 pm and proceeded to drive south through Grand Teton National Park. The Grand Tetons also provided spectacular scenery, as did the drive south through Jackson and the Wyoming Rockies. We were disappointed when the sun went down since we missed out on more beautiful scenery. The Grand Tetons As we flew home, we promised ourselves we would return to Yellowstone one summer when we would have time to see even more of this incredible place. As part of this renewed interest, we took a "Fly and Ride" vacation on a rental Harley Davidson Motorcycle. On July 17th, 1996, we departed the Harley Davidson dealer in Phoenix, Arizona for a trip north through some of the most beautiful country that you could imagine riding through. The map below shows the route that we took. Click on the red dots or the route highlighted in red to see some pictures from a segment of the trip. Route Map We rode together on a 1996 Harley Davidson Electra Glide Classic for about 1800 miles over 8 days. Phoenix, AZ We began our trip in Phoenix. This is where we picked up the Electra Glide Classic that was to be our home for the next 8 days. These pictures show Fred on the Electra Glide and the palm trees and high buildings that characterize Phoenix which were a stark contrast from the scenery that we were about to see. Fred on the Harley Electra Glide Classic Building in Phoenix, AZ Step one before we left was deciding what to bring along. Even though the luggage capacity on the Electra Glide Classic was much larger than the saddlebags on our Dyna Wide Glide, there was only room for about half of what we wanted to take. We learned some useful things from a book called Motorcycle Arizona by Frank Del Monte (Copyright 1994, Golden West Publishers, ISBN #0-914846-99-X). The first is to separate everything you plan to bring into two categories: everything that is absolutely necessary and other things that would be nice to have along. The next step is to cut back on items in the first category until everything fits. Another useful tip is to roll up clothes (shirts, jeans, etc. ) and secure them with a rubber band. This makes clothing items much easier to pack in the storage compartments on a motorcycle. There was only room for one pair of footwear and we were torn between motorcycle boots for protection and comfortable shoes for hiking. If you plan to do any amount of hiking, the best solution is to buy a pair of ankle-high hiking boots - and make sure to bring padded socks. Also, don't forget the rain gear and a canteen for water (especially if you are planning a ride in a warm area). Spread out on the bed in the picture below is everything that we packed with us. Items to Pack on the Motorcycle Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona Rather than take Interstate 17 from Phoenix to Flagstaff, we decided to try some of the scenic routes described in the Motorcycle Arizona! book. It was definitely a good move - rather than speeding down the interstate surrounded by cars and tractor trailers doing 75 mph, we took a relaxing ride past beautiful scenery where we seldom saw other vehicles. We drove by Lake Pleasant and through the towns of Wickenburg and Prescott before arriving at Williams, where we spent the night. We spent the next day at the south rim of the Grand Canyon. We took a helicopter ride that took us over the canyon to the North Rim. The view from a helicopter was fantastic! We visited the IMAX theater in Tusayan and then took a hike around the west rim of the canyon to Hopi Point and then took the shuttle to Hermits Rest. Anita at the Grand Canyon We stayed overnight in Tusayan and in the morning drove along East Rim Drive, stopping at several of the observation points. After visiting Yaki Point, we headed toward Page, Arizona to visit Lake Powell. The Grand Canyon, as viewed from a helicopter Lake Powell Lake Powell is a man-made lake running over 180 miles through Northern Arizona and Southern Utah. It was formed from the Colorado River by Glen Canyon Dam, which was completed in 1963. Glen Canyon is a National Recreational Area, with facilities for boating, fishing and camping. Lake Powell was named after John Wesley Powell, an explorer who chronicled the first expedition down the Colorado River. Lake Powell, near Page, Arizona We took a tour of the Glen Canyon Dam and power plant, which originated at the Carl Hayden Visitor Center. Glen Canyon Dam is the second highest dam in the United States. The highest is nearby Hoover Dam in Nevada. The power plant provides hydroelectric power to many medium and small cities and towns of the Western United States. The tour was very interesting and, since much of it was air-conditioned, it was refreshing after driving through the hot Arizona desert. Glen Canyon Dam and Power Plant Glen Canyon Dam and Power Plant After leaving Lake Powell, we headed northwest toward Kanab, Utah where we stayed overnight. The ride was scenic and all along the way we could smell sage brush. This is something you cannot experience the same way traveling in a car. The next day we visited Zion National Park. Zion National Park Zion National Park is an area of spectacular scenery - cliffs, canyons, greenery, wildlife, and the Virgin River. We rode to Zion National Park from Kanab, Utah, approaching the park from the East Entrance. We spent the morning sightseeing along Zion - Mt. Carmel Highway. The first landmark on this road is Checkerboard Mesa, named for the unusual pattern etched into the cliff by erosion. The scenic drive continues as tunnels and switchbacks in the road allow the rider to traverse the changes in elevation. This was quite exciting from a motorcycle. Checkerboard Mesa There are considerable differences in climate among the national parks in this area of the country. At the Grand Canyon, the visitor is at a high elevation, where it is relatively cool (high temperatures were in the 80’s when we were there, and we needed a jacket when riding in the evenings). At Zion National Park, the roads are at a lower elevation. Unfortunately, this makes it very hot (high 90’s) in the middle of the day. We decided to spend the afternoon touring the Visitor Centers, riding through the town of Springdale... --- ### 2002 Motorcycle Vacation to Colorado and Utah - Published: 2024-06-02 - Modified: 2024-06-02 - URL: https://anita-fred.net/trip-02-utah/ - Categories: Motorcycles, Travels - Tags: Travels In July 2002, we went on a motorcycle trip with our friends Carol and Steve through Colorado and Utah. This is a little unusual in that most folks don't think of handguns as tools that are useful for hunting. As you can see from the pictures below, they work just fine. Most of our hunting is done with Thompson Center Contender single-shot pistols or Revolvers. The reason we have decided to make handguns our tool of choice for hunting is that they increase the challenge of the hunt. She loves to give hugs, and her favorite place is on a lap. If it is nighttime and there are no laps, her next favorite place is to curl up on my pillow around my head like earmuffs. Sammy (a. k. a. The Tounce) Sammy (a. k. a. The Tounce) is the head cat of the household. His favorite pastime is eating. He won't let anyone forget when it is suppertime! Sammy is also very affectionate and is the lead mouse catcher of the family. His second favorite hobby is collecting and playing with milk-rings. He can leap in the air and catch one in his mouth almost every time. But - he will not bring them back - fetching is done by that inferior species of house pet! Alvin Alvin is named after that famous cartoon rodent, and he lives up to his name! When he passed away, he was about 13 years old, but he still thought he was a kitten. Alvin never had a hard time finding trouble to get into. He was interested in everything - a very curious kitty! Besides being the world's most curious cat, he was the world's cutest. He had the cutest white belly, but you had better not touch it! Here he is after a weekend when Morn and Dad were home for two days. Trying to stay up with his people was too much for him. Alvin Relaxing in his Favorite Place One hobby that all of the kitties share is window sitting. Here are Tammy and Sammy (as a kitten) on a warm summer day. Tammy and Sammy Enjoying Some Outside Air As you can see, The Tounce (Sammy) is unhappy about having company! Shelby Shelby is one of our latest additions. We adopted Shelby and her sister, Leanne, in April 2002. Shelby's favorite hobby is racing. She loves to run down the longer hallways in our house. She also loves to relax by lying on her back and showing her belly. Shelby Showing Off Her Tabby Spot She has a little "tabby spot" in the middle of her belly that she loves to show off! Mama Leanne is the other new addition to the family. Her nickname is "Mama" since she was found by Kitty Angels along with her kittens. Leanne is a very friendly kitty - when guests come to our house, she is a regular party animal, going from guest to guest to be petted! We adopted Leanne and Shelby together - they are best friends and inseparable! Leanne and Shelby were adopted from Kitty Angels, where they received the best care before we became their parents. Leanne's nickname is "Mama" since she was found by Kitty Angels along with several of her kittens. Mama's favorite hobbies are chasing her laser mouse around and watching TV. Her favorite channel is Animal Planet, and her favorite DVD is Video Catnip! Zeke We also recently adopted a Tabby Cat named Zeke. Zeke is very cute and playful. He loves little furry mice, and he has a lot of energy! Christmas is Zeke's favorite time of year because he gets many new toys to play with. Zeke is very affectionate and likes to hang out with his people. Zeke and His Toy Mouse Click on any of the kitty pictures for a surprise! All of our kitties love to play at Christmas time! To this end, we've created a Supercharged (Blown) and Injected 1963 Corvette Coupe. Our Corvette Corvette is commonly known as a "split-window" coupe due to the unique design of the rear window that was only available in the 1963 model year. Our car has recently been featured in Vette Magazine (click here to read the article). 1963 Corvette Split Window The car was fully restored in the early 1980s and fitted with a Blown 350 c. i. Small Block Chevy motor utilizing dual 4-barrel carburetors. The following are some additional pictures of the car taken at the time that the initial restoration was completed: First Blown 1963 Corvette As you can see, the restoration was a complete one, including the interior: Initial Restoration - Interior We have undertaken a project to build a new motor for this car and updated the drive train to handle more power. The suspension and brakes are also being updated to modernize and improve performance. The new motor is shown below: Blown and Injected 383 ci SBC The new motor is a 383 c. i. Small Block Chevy with a 6-71 Supercharger and Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI). The Blown and Injected combination produces tremendous power and torque, while the associated computer-controlled fuel injection system results in excellent drivability on the street. The components that went into the latest motor include: A late model 350 c. i. GM Performance short block with 4-bolt mains set up for a factory hydraulic roller cam and lifters. An Eagle 4340 stroker crank, eagle H-beam 4340 rods, and Sportsman Racing Products (JE) inverted dome forged pistons. The resulting displacement is 383 c. i. with an 8. 8:1 static compression ratio. Air Flow Research CNC ported aluminum cylinder heads fitted with Ferra 2. 05” Intake and 1. 60” Exhaust Hi-Performance valves. A Competition CAMs Xtreme Energy XR288HR Hydraulic Roller camshaft (this is a dual-pattern CAM with 288/294 adv. duration and . 520/. 540 lift). Competition CAMs springs, retainers, roller lifters, etc. , and a Jessel shaft mounted roller rocker system, 1. 6 ratio. A Blower Drive Service High Efficiency (air-locs rotors) 6-71 Supercharger and intake. This kit features fully polished components and an 8 mm 3” drive. The supercharger is 3% under-driven, resulting in a peak boost of about 9. 5 psi at 6500 RPM. An Enderle Bugcatcher injector hat converted to electronic fuel injection by Blower Drive Service. The conversion uses 8 flow-matched injectors firing in batch mode. A Big Stuff Gen 3 Electronic Fuel Injection Control System. This system uses a wide-band O2 sensor for superior performance during closed-loop operation. An MSD Billet Distributor. Digital-6 Ignition System, Blaster Coil, and 8. 5 mm wires. A Moroso oiling system (pan, pump, and pickup) with a Star Machine vacuum pump system (this adds about 20 - 30 additional HP and prevents crankcase pressure buildup problems common to supercharged applications). A March Performance serpentine accessory drive system with an Edelbrock high-volume water pump and a 140A Powermaster alternator. The high-output alternator provides plenty of electrical power for the EFI system and the MSD ignition. A set of Hooker Super-Comp Headers (1 3/4" primaries, 3" collectors). The rest of the exhaust system consists of a Stainless Works stainless steel system utilizing 2. 5" stainless steel pipes and dual turbo-style stainless steel mufflers. Aeroquip braided lines and AN hose ends and fittings. Earl's Performance Products and Performance Stainless Steel also supplied hard-to-find plumbing parts. The engine was professionally tuned by Quest Racing in Worchester, MA. Mike and Charlene at Quest Racing specialize in supercharged and fuel-injected engines and have excellent facilities, including an engine Dynamometer. The final combination runs on 93 octane pump gas, made 625+ HP, and just shy of 600 ft-lbs of torque on Quest's dyno. While these peak numbers are pretty impressive, the real plus for this motor on the street is that it makes over 500 ft-lbs of torque from 3,000 RPM all the way up to 6,500 RPM. Click here to see the details of the dyno test output. Blown and Injected 383 ci Small Block Chevy on the Dyno Click on the picture below to see a video of the dyno test of the new motor. Dyno Test where motor made over 600 hp! At this stage, the new motor and drive train are in the car, and the motor is running. The following are some pictures of the new motor in the car: The Motor in our Vette As you can see, many plumbing and electrical connections are associated with the conversion to electronic fuel injection. The gauges on the back of the injector are liquid-filled Pro Comp Series from Auto Meter, which monitors oil pressure, supercharger boost, and fuel pressure. Fuel System Lines and Guages Anita has helped a great deal on this project from start to finish. One unique thing that she contributed was a custom-made embroidered cover for the injector, which is shown in the picture below: Injector Inlet Cover We had to modify a spare hood and add a pin-on system to get the hood to fit. Getting a good fit requires a lot of trial and error, fitting and cutting a little bit at a time. With a little care, the result can turn out quite good. Ron and Renee, Randall at Metal-Morphous, did the paintwork on the car. Ron does excellent work with fiberglass, and he and Renee are a real joy to work with! Modified Hood to Accommodate the Blower The following shot shows a close-up of the supercharger and injector with the hood on. As you can see, trimming the hood to fit tightly around all the linkage and plumbing required a lot of effort. Supercharger and Injector The interior of the car has been outfitted with a tach/shift light from Stewart Warner, some new Auto Meter gauges (to monitor charging system voltage and engine temperature), and a custom stereo/CD changer combination from Custom Auto Sound that looks like the original Corvette vertical radio. The pedals and associated cable-actuated throttle system are from Lokar Engineering.... --- ### Pro Street Hot Rodding - Published: 2024-05-01 - Modified: 2024-05-01 - URL: https://anita-fred.net/pro-street/ - Categories: Pro Street - Tags: Cobra, Corvette We enjoy building and driving Pro Street Hot Rod cars. Our first project was a Blown and Injected 1963 Split-Window Corvette. We have been working on this car since the early 1980s, building two Blown engines for it over the years and doing a great deal of restoration. The car has recently been featured in Vette Magazine. We drive this car weekly during the summer and participate in local cruise nights and shows. More information on our Corvette can be found here. 1963 Blown and Injected Split Window Corvette We have also built a 1967 Shelby Cobra roadster. This car features a Big Block all-aluminum Ford motor and Electronic Fuel Injection. This car was built from a kit made by ERA Replicas. This car is a replica of a 1967 Shelby 427SC Cobra Roadster. This car was built from a Kit from ERA Replicas in New Britain, CT. ERA makes a very accurate replica of the 427SC Cobra, and its website provides a wealth of good information on the design of its 427SC Roadster. We are in the process of building our own 427SC Cobra Roadster. A few pictures of our completed Cobra are shown below. Our 427SC Cobra The 427SC Cobra was, until recently, the highest-performance production vehicle available. The 427SC version of these cars can go from 0 to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds, from 0 to 100 mph, and back to 0 in about 12 seconds. Our 427SC Cobra From Rear They were originally built by Carroll Shelby for sports car racing in the 1960s. The first cobras were built by combining a defunct British Sports Car called the AC Bristol with a Ford 260 ci lightweight V-8 engine. These cars were an instant success in sports car racing. Carroll Shelby Motors also made a version of the Cobra Roadster for the street. Later, when Ford created the Hi-Performance 289 ci lightweight V-8, Shelby switched to this more powerful engine in both the competition and street versions of the Cobra Roadster. This engine, combined with the racing-grade suspension and brakes that Shelby added to the AC Bristol, made a great all-around Sports car. In 1966, the story goes that a Ford Big Block 427 FE motor was sitting in the back of Shelby's shop and somehow found its way into the Cobra Roadster, where the 427 Cobra was born. The 427SC was and remains one of the fastest production vehicles ever made. Only a handful of original Shelby 427 Cobras still exist. Fortunately, several replica manufacturers are making reproductions of the original 427SC Cobra. The following link gives a more detailed history of Carroll Shelby and his Cobra cars. Ford 427 FE Motor in an ERA 427SC The 427SC was originally made with the Ford Big Block 427 FE Side-Oiler motor and an independent rear suspension (IRS). ERA IRS with Competition Outboard Brakes Our car is based on a hand-built chassis that is much stronger than the original. The chassis is hand-welded in a jig and then powder-coated. ERA #753 (Our Car) Being Built in the Chassis Jig ERA #753 Completed Chassis Our car is constructed using a high-quality fiberglass body, a very accurate duplicate of the original 427SC Cobra's aluminum body. The body is then permanently bonded to the chassis to maintain its shape and not crack over the car's life. Actual Body for ERA #753 (Our Car) Body after installation and bonding to Chassis As a result, the car is painted at a relatively early stage in its assembly. We again chose Ron Randall at Metal-Morphous, Inc. in Wallingford, CT, to paint and bodywork on our Cobra. Ron has tremendous experience in body and paint work on Cobras and is the proud owner of ERA #148. Ron's attention to the bodywork side of a Cobra paint project is unbelievable. Show Quality Body and Paint Work by Ron Randall at Metal-Morphous For example, Ron felt that he could create a more accurate looking set of rear fender flairs on the ERA body so he completely rebuilt the flares to ensure the proper "look". Completed Paint Job on our Cobra - Note the reworked rear fender flares. Ron did a show-quality paint job on our Cobra and then applied his proprietary metallization process under the hood and trunk lid. Ron's process makes the car appear to have an aluminum body like the original Cobras. He also carried the racing stripes on the car to the aluminum finish under the hood and the trunk lid. Ron's Metallization Process on the Underside of Hood and Trunk We turned to Keith Craft Performance Engines of Arkadelphia, AR, to build the motor for our Cobra. Keith started with an aluminum Shelby performance FE Side-Oiler block. He bored and stroked the motor to displace 482 ci. Dyno Test of 482 ci Ford FE Motor We've built This second street motor with Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI). The computer control associated with EFI systems allows what would otherwise be radical engine and injection setups on the street with good drivability and street-able performance. We love all types of Drag Racing and typically attend several major events each year. We have been to NHRA, IHRA, and AHDRA national-level events over the past few years and have collected many photos and videos of the races. *** Note that some of the videos on this page are large and may take a minute or two to download. Be patient, they are well worth the wait! *** There is no doubt that the Top Fuel Dragsters are the kings of drag racing today. The sound that you heard when you came to this webpage was a pair of T/F Dragsters doing a burnout. Top Fuel Dragster Burnout at 2007 Mac Tools U. S. Nationals These cars use a 500 ci aftermarket racing motor based on the Chrysler Hemi. They run on Nitromethane fuel and use a combination of supercharging and fuel injection to make over 8,000 hp! Top Fuel Dragster Burnouts The modern Nitromethane Fuel Motor is an engineering marvel. These motors only run for about 1 - 2 minutes between total rebuilds! These motors require dual magnetos and two spark plugs per cylinder to keep the tremendous amount of fuel that goes through them lit. Top Fuel Engine - 10,000 hp on Nitromethane The Nitro Fuel Funny Cars are close in performance to the Top Fuel Dragsters and they put on quite a show. They use the same engines as the Top Fuel Dragsters and develop the same 10,000 hp on Nitromethane. Their short wheelbases make the Fuel Funny Cars one of the most difficult vehicles to drive on the face of the earth. These cars (and the Top Fuel Dragsters) generate over 4G's of acceleration during a run down the 1,000 ft track. They cover this distance in 4. 5 sec (for T/F Dragsters) or 4. 7 sec (for the Funny Cars). Both of these cars accelerate to over 100 mph in the first 60 feet and cars reach speeds of 280 mph in 1/8 of a mile. Drag racing was not always the hi-tech, mega-dollar sport that it is today. Back in the '50s and '60s, drag racing was mostly an amateur endeavor where competitors used a combination of factory vehicles and speed parts to compete. One of the best classes to emerge during this time was the Gasser. These were 1940-era coupes with 60's era OEM motors whose power output was increased via fuel injection and a supercharger. There was no better example of the 60's era Gasser than the car campaigned by K. S. Pitman. The following video shows the classic 60's Blown Gasser built and campaigned by K. S. We have gotten several questions about how this and the associated computer infrastructure in our home works. We've created this section of our website to attempt to explain this. Note that you can move your cursor over any part of the pictures on this page to see what each component in the picture does. Our home network provides the following services to every room in the house: Wired 1 Gbps Ethernet connectivity via a local LAN Access to the Internet via a Cable Modem and Router/Firewall Wireless Access in the house and on the property via both 802. 11a and 802. 11g wireless LAN service High-Definition Dolby 5. 1 Digital Direct Broadcast Satellite System with DirecTV Service Two DirecTV Digital Video Recording Units Two networked TiVo Series 2 Personal Video Recorders which support Home Media Option via our Home Server A server-based audio system using several Turtle Beach AudioTrons which provides access to a centralized copy of our audio collection Satellite Radio via SkyFi™ Satellite Radio Tuners which provide 100+ channels of CD-quality digital audio A home video network that includes CATV services as well as the capability to share video components by all TVs A wired IR system that allows all shared video devices to be controlled from any room in the home Off-air HDTV via an off-air antenna system with a rotator that can be controlled via a remote from anywhere in the house Pronto Pro programmable graphics remote controls that allow the use of our home video network and components All of this equipment and technology provides a variety of multimedia services in various rooms within our home. Probably the most interesting setup is our Home Theater. This system uses a Theater Grade DLP Projector System and Video Processor from Runco to create Cinescope (2. 35:1 format) images on a 96" screen. The system also features a Fireball Media Server from Escient which stores our CD collection (over 800 discs) on a hard drive and provides indexing of over 1,000 DVDs stored in four changers which it controls. The Escient system will look for all of the jacket information for any new DVD via the Internet and displays a nicely organized view of all of our discs providing easy access. The sound system is based upon premium components from Anthem, Aerial, and Sunfire with over 5,500 watts of power delivered to 7 speakers plus an additional 1,500 watts delivered to Bass Shakers in the four theater chairs in the room. It's quite an experience with the volume up when a big explosion occurs in a movie! Most of the source devices have some form of Internet connectivity which allows us to download and play movies and TV shows via the Internet as well as access local video and audio content stored on our Home Server. The most useful devices for this purpose are the AppleTV, the DirecTV DVR, and the Playstation 3 Game console. All three can access high-quality content over the internet. Our system has access to high-definition content via BluRay discs, our DirecTV Satellite System, and via the Internet. Finally, we have our PlayStation 3 and Wii Gaming consoles hooked up to the system which provides an alternative to watching video. Again, these systems are linked to the Internet via our home network to support networking gaming, and access to content around the world. We also have a fairly extensive A-V Entertainment Center in our Family Room. This system also has a 9. 1 ATMOS surround system and a rear projection TV as well as Satellite Radio, TiVo DVRs, and a DVD Changer. A-V Equipment and Big Screen TV in the Family Room Another interesting aspect of our home network is support for a centralized database of digital music which can be played from almost any room in the house. This system used the Turtle Beach AudioTron (or the TiVo with Home Media Option) to select from our music collection which is stored on our home server in MP3 format. Turtle Beach AudioTron and XM Satellite Radio (Game Room Stereo System) The AudioTron uses our home LAN to communicate with the server and provides a web-based interface for the selection of music. This interface can be accessed from any PC in the house. Interface to AudioTron via a PC and Web Browser The backbone of our home network is called the "Node 0" and it is located in our basement. This equipment provides multimedia services to each room in our home as well as wireless broadband access to the internet anywhere on our property. Node 0 - The Nerve Center of Our Home Network A variety of multimedia services are provided via wall jacks in each room similar to the one shown below. Some rooms use multiple jacks to provide additional Data, Video, or other connections where they are needed. Typical Multimedia Outlet An important component of our network is our Home Server. It consists of an Intel Pentium-based PC running Windows XP Professional. This machine has a little over 5 Terabytes of disk storage which is used to hold an extensive collection of audio files, graphics files, video files, and our work and home-related computer files. The server and the information that it stores can be accessed by a PC in the house, by the TiVos and AudioTrons for the display of graphics files and playback of our music and video collection. This machine also acts as a web server for www. anita-fred. net. Finally, it provides centralized backup for all of our PCs as well as basic network services such as DHCP and DNS services. Our Home Server Our Home Server is based upon a custom-built PC system. It is a Windows Home Server machine with a storage capacity of 9 Terabytes. For more details on this system, click here.
